The building was constructed during the 1897-1898 timeframe as a two-story brick building.  A third floor was added in the 1920’s. The building, vacant at the time and in the need for urgent repair, was purchased in 2019 and rebuilt to Passive House EnerPHit standards during the 2019-2022 timeframe.  The building was renamed Six&Kane and was dedicated on October 7-8, 2022.

The 63 North Fraley Street Passive House project in Kane was developed by 63 Fraley Street, LLC in collaboration with the West Penn Power Sustainable Energy Fund (WPPSEF).  WPPSEF is a 501c(3) nonprofit organization that was founded to promote the deployment of sustainable energy technologies that benefit the West Penn Power ratepayers.

The building, located at 63 North Fraley Street, sits on Route 6 in uptown Kane.  Route 6 is a transcontinental highway that stretches from California to Massachusetts, and named by National Geographic as one of “America’s most scenic drives”.  Route 6 is vital to the economy of Kane and the ecotourism industry of the area that promotes responsible travel to natural areas, conserving the environment, and improving the well-being of the local people. The marriage of Route 6 and Kane is indisputable. So, after a two-year discovery process to select a name that both resonates and inspires, the building was named Six&Kane.

The spark and support that the community of Kane provided to WPPSEF when developing the project was instrumental in selecting Kane as the community to showcase the high-performance building technology known as “Passive House”.  Route 6 provided high visibility for the project. WPPSEF also wanted to leverage and strengthen its ongoing support and investments in the region with the PA Wilds Center for Entrepreneurship, Keystone Elk County Alliance, and several other projects in McKean and Elk Counties.
